Four adventurers awaken in the dungeon of the dilapidated fortress of Dullan in the Kyne realm of Wellund. Each awoke in the separate cells of Fort Dullan’s dungeon to the sound of rain and thunder… tho none could immediately remember how they got there.
- Mirfae-Mim, a male kyne war orphan of the Great War and druid of the Eldish Order, was captured as he traversed the woods near his home in Wellund.
- Nienna, a female highland elf alchemist on a secret mission for her people, was waylaid as she traveled the roads in search of information regarding Akane the Red.
- Krunk, a hymallian barbarian travelling the world in search of adventure, was captured along the road as well.
- Sam, a kyne war orphan and a child prodigy in the art of magic, likewise was captured… though the exact details have yet to become known.
Mir was able to convince the guard dog, around whose neck hung the keys, to jump up on the door to Mir’s cell. Mir grabbed the keys and left himself out… making completely sure to remain on guard for the the dog to attack him. Of course the dog was simply a favored pet and not an actual guard dog… so no attack was coming. Freeing the other prisoners and introducing themselves, they set about exploring the fortress.
Sam followed some distance behind, unsure whether or not to trust these strange people.
Traveling in the darkness and allowing the intermittent flashes of lightning to light the way they, somewhat incautiously, traveled down the hallway leading away from the dungeon… following the only path available to them. The fortress was in severe disrepair owing to the its role in the war. The ceiling had caved in in some places and many doors they passed were jammed tight. Near a bend in the hall they could hear arguing ahead. Moments later the arguing ahead stopped and all became quiet.
Rounding the bend they could see a light ahead. The light was coming through a crack between double doors ahead. Krunk took a moment to look through the crack into the from before and found a well repaired room with a lit fire pit and tables… but with no sign of he people who had been arguing earlier.
They traveled onward to the next door, with only Nienna watching behind them, to the next door. Inside they found a large store room with tables and upon these tables they found their gear and goods. Mirfae-Mim was also re-united with his extremely cute vicious warbeast riding dog, Quessa.
With their gear collected and touching reunions completed, the still completely incautious adventurers (namely Krunk) blunder out into the hall to find their captors waiting for them.
The battle would quickly turn into a rout with Quessa landing the first terrible blow against Ol’ Grump… biting his leg in twain. Not to be undone, and unwilling to be bothered with his weapons to fight such measly opponents, Krunk then attacked the kinnish warrior known as William by punching him in the leg. The terrible blow was enough to break the warriors leg and send him to the floor.
At this moment Sam, using his experience as an orphan living on the streets, attempted to sneak behind the third captor… a kyne woman by the name of Lynn. He was unable to sneak behind her and instead drew her attention. She promptly attempted to incapacitate Sam with non-lethal force.
Sam deftly dodged her attacks and then, switching tactics, Sam cast a spell to blind the woman and quickly moved behind her to land a devastating sneak attack bringing the woman to her knees.
In an attempt to aid Sam, Nienna drew her pistol and aimed, through her team mates, at the remaining woman. Nienna’s shot whizzed past Mirfae’s ear and ricocheted off the ground at Sam’s feet… narrowly missing both.
Upon recovering from his brush with friendly fire, Mirfae once more attempted to parley with their captor’s leader. Unfortunately Ol’ Grump was more than a little senile and very very grumpy and would not stand down. And so it was that Krunk, drawing his massive greataxe and swinging hard for the hill dwarf’s head, did disintegrate one hill dwarf head in a spew of blood, gore, and bone chips. Krunk then finished off the kyne warrior as well.
Enraged, Lynn also switched tactics and, upon drawing her sword, landed a devastating attack to Sam’s leg. Sam promptly crawled away while Quessa leaped to his defense, severely wounding Lynn and dropping her to the ground.
At this point Nienna watched the door while Mirfae attempted to question Lynn and discovered that they had not been targeted but had been selected by chance alone. They were simply in the worng place at the wrong time.
Lynn and her allies had become aware of a slaver up north that was willing to pay by the head for any and all “living men, women, and children of able body or otherwise.” A fourth member of her group, a man with facial tattoos by the name of Quebsa had gone to Mod’rile to make contact and arrange transfer for the prisoners. Quebsa had only just set out the day before and was not expected back for several weeks.
Mirfae then treated Sam’s injuries.
When he turned back to Lynn she had died of her wounds. She and her comrades would soon after be properly buried my Mirfae. Mirfae would also clean up the gore and blood in the hallway as best he was able. They slept the night in the main hall near the exit to the fort.
In the morning, as they were leaving they discover a small airship landed outside. From the ship a Kugarr woman in full plate and a male of undetermined race in a black hooded robe where disembarking from the airship as the party exited the fort.
The woman greeted them and asked if any one else was inside. When the party responded that there was not she offered them a job. Retrieve a family heirloom from a crypt in the north reaches of Thaldaros. She made it clear to them that they were not to share the information and that she would be expecting word from the one way or the other. She stated that, if she suspected that they had shared the information, she would hunt them down and kill them… though she was not rude. She was simply matter of fact. When the party agreed the Kugarr woman and her companion boarded their airship and promptly left.
Nienna recognized the woman as Akane the Red, her mission target, but said nothing to the others.
The party then consulted Mirfae regarding the closest significant settlement and he pointed them north in the direction of Morton, a former trade hub along the border between Durendark and Wellund. As they traveled Mirfae gave away gold and precious materials to the handful of displace men and women they met along the way.
They also met a man dressed in blue robes and his traveling companion, a small neko girl. The party felt there was something very unusual or familiar about this man but could not place exactly what it was. In fact this man was the great God Xanatos, come to see them off on what was likely to be an important adventure and quest.
